A long-standing client had been on the same pricing for several years, so when I spoke with him recently about increasing his monthly support plan, the conversation naturally turned to what we actually do for him. It was a fair question, as much of our work is intangible and when everything is running smoothly it’s easy to forget it is being done at all. Given that he felt comfortable using AI, he decided to develop his own site and host it elsewhere, and we wished him all the best.
Then we received the call. An application that was critical to his business, and which had worked with us for years without any issues, was no longer working and he needed help. By building and hosting his own site, he had effectively taken on the role of software developer.
Did he have the time to keep doing that on an ongoing basis, or would he rather delegate it to someone else so he could concentrate on running his business? He decided to re-engage as a client, and now has a much better idea of what goes on behind the scenes.
AI makes it easier than ever to build things yourself, but building it is only the start. Someone still has to look after it.
As the old saying goes, you never miss the water till the well runs dry.
