Ex light heavyweight contender and Liverpool boxing legend Franny Hand ran a proper old-fashioned gym, a gym where a young Tyson Fury had his first sparring session, a gym Tyson described as “a backstreet Bronx gym from the 1940’s“. I remember seeing Tyson and his father, John, one of Franny’s stable of fighters, in the gym regularly.
I wasn’t there for business. I was there to get fit, to push myself. Pads. Sparring. Conditioning. It was hard but fun and I turned up several times a week every week for years. As a result I built friendships with a great bunch of lads including Mike, who would later become one of my best referral partners.
Over time, I realized Mike wasn’t just anyone. He was the IT Director of one of the largest Barristers’ Chambers in the UK. But in the gym, he was just a guy showing up, grinding it out. I never pitched him. Never “networked”. We just trained, week after week, pushing each other, getting fit and building a real connection.
After a couple of years, when he learned I was trustworthy and was good at what I did, he gave me a low-risk referral (for him) to develop an intranet system for chambers. This was an opportunity to show him what I could do and I treated it seriously delivering on time and within budget.
That low value referral led to more work including a chambers website rebuild, and ultimately an introduction to a Criminal Barrister who ran one of the biggest specialist auction companies in the UK. I built and managed an entire online auction platform for them which is still in use today and that single introduction changed the trajectory of my business and my life.
So here is the truth; referrals aren’t transactions. They’re the by-product of trust, consistency, and shared experiences, and profitable relationships like this don’t happen overnight. Most people want instant ROI from networking. They pitch prematurely and chase quick wins but the long game is where the magic happens. Show up. Deliver. Repeat. Build relationships and trust and the opportunities compound, often in ways you can’t anticipate.
